Jericho
Major Touristic Cities

Ancient Jericho, which was first settled in the eighth millennium B. C., lies 250 meters below sea level and is situated at what is now known as Tel AlSultan. Remains of defensive city walls and an impressive stone tower from this period can still be seen. Jericho is best known from the biblical account of Joshua, who caused the walls to fall by blowing shofars (ram's horn trumpets). According to the Book of Kings, the Prophet Elijah cured the bitter>> waters of Ein AlSultan, the spring there, with salt (11 Kings 2:2 1). Modem Jericho is located nearly two kilometers to the south, where the Byzantine town of Jericho once stood.
