Jaffa
Major
Touristic Cities |
Today, an integral part of Tel Aviv, Jaffa is situated in the region Joshua gave to the tribe of Dan and it is one of the oldest cities in the world. The name recalls the Hebrew word for beautiful,, and according to tradition, it was named for Japhet, one of Noah's three sons. It served as a port for Jerusalem and it was from there that the prophet Jonah embarked for Tarshish. The ships laden with the famous cedars of Lebanon used by King Solomon to build his temple landed there. It was at Jaffa that the apostle Peter, guest of Simon the Tanner, resuscitated Tabitha. A Greek legend recounts that this is also the site of the rock to which the beautiful Andromeda was bound as a sacrifice to the sea monster but who was then saved from her terrible fate by Perseus
History passed through Jaffa often, sometimes leaving death and destruction in its wake. Occupied by the Egyptians circa 3400 years ago, the port later was a coveted objective for all the armies that passed through Israel.
Destroyed by Napoleon in 1799, the town was rebuilt at the eginning of the 19th century. It was governed by the Otomans until the British Mandate and not until 1948 did it return once more to Israel. A favorite with young Israeli artists, modem Jaffa has a wealth of stores, bars and restaurants, exhibitions and places to see, including the Great Mosque, the Clock Tower, the archaeological museum, the flea market, the artists' quarter and the fishing port
